Ms. Daisy’s class is filled with Re-Education veterans. They have been around awhile and know a thing or two about social thinking skills. As a result, we spent our first social thinking group reviewing the Zones of Regulation before taking these skills to the next level. We watched this amazing Prezi created by Kryssi Plasch. Yes, it has a couple of Sesame Street video clips in it but they are lively and really drive home the concepts. Plus, Ms. Daisy’s class is light-hearted and fun!
For the first half of the year, we are going to learn about emotional intelligence and self-regulation. According to Psychology Today, “emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include three skills: emotional awareness; the ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving; and the ability to manage emotions, which includes regulating your own emotions and cheering up or calming down other people.”
If your student is in Ms. Daisy class, we will be covering the topics: feelings are contagious, combining emotions = a whole new emotion, think=feel=action, and tools we can use to regulate our emotions and subsequent actions.
Heres a quick glimpse of a visual we will be using to determine how specific tools affect our bodies and moods.
We will try each one of these self-regulation tools and rate how they affect each one of us individually.
This is just a glimpse of all of the amazing emotional intelligence skills we will be learning this year. Stay tuned for further updates about our learning.
